The Hollywood Academy celebrated last night the 13th edition of the Governors Awards in an emotional gala that served to honor such influential personalities in the film industry as actor
Michael J. Fox
and filmmaker
Peter Weir
.
These honorary awards, held this year at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel (Los Angeles, United States), also recognized the careers of director
Euzhan Palcy
and composer
Diane Warren
.
The return to a great event organized by the Academy after the last Oscars, which will go down in history for Will Smith's slap to Chris Rock, had as a general tone a very emotional atmosphere in which at times tears of emotion were mixed with the applause of the guests at the ceremony.
The attendees, who were mainly professionals from all sectors involved in cinema and journalists,
dedicated the night's ovation to Canadian Michael J. Fox
, who won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in the category.
"All your work brings great humanity,
you have shown how to fight without losing faith in art
. You have never wanted them to feel sorry for you.
A victim, never; always an inspiration
. In addition to being talented, you are a great person."
This is how the actor Woody Harrelson introduced the actor who played Marty McFly in the
Back to the Future
trilogy (1985).
As soon as Fox rose to his feet, those present followed suit and, in a show of respect and affection, cheered for a man who has been battling Parkinson's disease for the past 32 years.
"Well,
the song
No Surrender
(Bruce Springsteen) has always been
my personal anthem
, so it's been easy;
it's not that
bad," the actor joked when picking up this honorary award that takes the same statuette shape as the conventional Oscars.
Fox wanted to thank the 54 members of the Hollywood Academy who chose him to win the award in this edition and the people who work at the foundation that bears his name and which is focused on Parkinson's research.

But it was when the award-winning interpreter mentioned his illness that feelings surfaced the most among an audience full of big screen stars such as
Cate Blanchett
,
Jamie Lee Curtis
,
Jessica Chastain
,
Ana de Armas
,
Kevin Feige
,
Colin Farrell
,
Brendan Fraser
or
Tom Hanks
.
"Let's not fool ourselves,
it's a bitch that they diagnosed me at the age of 29.
Don't applaud, this is how it is, these are things that happen and it is synonymous with being alive," he explained, ending up happily stating that "whatever they say, no one can deny " who in the 80s was "a very famous actor".
Peter Weir, in memory of Robin Williams
Another of the most outstanding moments was the recognition of director Peter Weir, author of cult films such as
Gallipoli
(1981),
Life Fearless
(1993),
The Truman Show
(1998) or
Master and Commander
(2003).
Although, 33 years after its premiere, the work that still permanently accompanies the figure of Weir is undoubtedly
The Dead Poets Club
(1989), starring the late
Robin Williams
and to which he wanted to dedicate the award with a intimate speech.
"I wish I were here to enjoy it together and to work with him.
I loved asking him, 'Can I let you focus on something for 5 minutes?
"He was so dispersed... but that's where his creativity was born," said the filmmaker who said goodbye, defining himself as "a mere artisan of cinema."
The event took place in a very cordial atmosphere among other industry figures who took advantage of the breaks to get up from the tables where they were having dinner and chat with other colleagues scattered around the room.
A great opportunity for personalities like
Guillermo del Toro
,
Jordan Peele
,
Baz Luhrmann
or
Alejandro Iñárritu
, among many others, to share a gala in a relaxed way.
The 13th edition of the Governors Awards also served to see how the Academy recognized the Californian composer Diane Warren, nominated up to 13 times for the Oscars, and who was finally able to collect her long-awaited statuette.
"Mom, I have finally found this man. We are going to have a magnificent life together," he commented on the award and added that he had not lost the previous 13 times because "it was already a great luck that so many films were nominated among hundreds of candidates ".
Filmmaker Euzhan Palcy, the first black woman in history to direct a film for a major Hollywood studio, was the last to take the stage and "celebrate" the victory of greater openness and diversity in the industry.
"It didn't make sense that a skin color determined whether you could make movies or not. I feel that in my career I have used the camera not to record but to heal wounds," said the natural director of Martinique who arrived accompanied by young film promises from from his native country.
After the celebration of the Governors Awards, the Hollywood Academy fully enters the race towards the
Oscars 2023
, whose
nominees will be announced on January 24
and its 95th edition will be held on March 12.
